Diabetes: Look After Your Teeth to Manage Blood Glucose
A landmark clinical study published in The Journal of Clinical Periodontology highlights the vital importance of professional oral hygiene for people living with type 2 diabetes, revealing that non-surgical gum treatment directly improves blood glucose levels.
It is estimated that over 1.3 million Australians are living with type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes develops when body cells become resistant to insulin, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. Without effective management, high blood glucose causes systemic complications including peripheral nerve damage (neuropathy), diabetic retinopathy, kidney dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease.
The Two-Way Connection Between Gum Disease and Diabetes
Periodontal (gum) disease and diabetes share a well-documented two-way relationship:
- Diabetes Increases Periodontitis Risk: Elevated blood sugar weakens white blood cell function and reduces oxygen delivery to tissues, making diabetic patients up to 3 times more susceptible to aggressive bacterial gum infections.
- Gum Disease Worsens Blood Glucose Control: Chronic bacterial gum inflammation releases inflammatory cytokines (such as TNF-alpha and IL-6) into the bloodstream. These systemic inflammatory markers worsen insulin resistance, making blood sugar much harder to control.
Clinical Trial Findings: 'Deep Cleaning' Reduces HbA1c Levels
The clinical study evaluated adults diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and chronic periodontitis, dividing them into two groups over a 6-month period:
- Group A (Deep Cleaning): Received oral hygiene instruction plus scaling and root planing (deep periodontal cleaning below the gumline to remove bacterial plaque and calculus).
- Group B (Control): Received oral hygiene instruction and superficial plaque removal above the gumline only.
The Results
The group receiving deep periodontal scaling experienced a statistically significant reduction in HbA1c levels and fasting plasma glucose, whereas the control group showed no improvement. In clinical terms, the drop in HbA1c achieved through deep dental cleaning was comparable to adding a second anti-diabetic medication!
"The main conclusion of the study is that the non-surgical treatment of periodontitis improves the glycemic status and levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), proving the profound importance of oral health in diabetes management."

Diabetic Oral Care Guidelines from Oak Park Dental & Denture Clinic
If you or a family member live with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, maintaining rigorous oral care is an essential arm of your overall health strategy:
- Schedule 3 to 4 Month Dental Hygiene Visits: Regular scaling and root planing eliminate bacterial reservoirs before systemic inflammation spikes.
- Monitor Oral Tissue Healing: Diabetic patients experience delayed wound healing. If you notice bleeding gums, persistent mouth sores, or loose teeth, seek early clinical assessment.
- Prevent Denture Stomatitis: Diabetic denture wearers have a higher incidence of fungal thrush (Candida albicans). Ensure your dentures are cleaned daily and removed overnight.
- Maintain Thorough Home Hygiene: Brush twice daily with a soft electric toothbrush, floss daily, and use an alcohol-free chlorhexidine rinse if prescribed.
