Dental Bridge Cost in Melbourne (2026): What You Pay and When a Bridge Makes Sense
What you are paying for
A standard bridge replaces one missing tooth with three linked pieces. The teeth either side of the gap are shaped and capped with crowns, and a false tooth hangs between them. The whole thing is cemented in. You do not take it out.
At Oak Park Dental a 3-unit bridge costs $3,200 to $5,400 in 2026.
That range is wide because no two gaps are the same. The next section explains where in it you are likely to land.
What moves the price
The material. Zirconia, porcelain fused to metal and all-ceramic bridges all cost different amounts. Front teeth usually call for a more natural-looking ceramic. Back teeth can take something tougher and less fussy.
The state of the anchor teeth. This matters more than people expect. If one of the teeth holding the bridge has a large old filling, it may need a core build-up first ($350 to $580). If it has a dead or infected nerve, it needs root canal treatment ($495 to $1,700) before it can carry a bridge.
How many teeth are missing. Two missing teeth in a row means a longer bridge, more lab work and a higher fee.
You get a written quote after an exam and X-rays of the anchor teeth. Nothing starts until you have agreed to it.
Bridge, implant or partial denture
These are the three realistic ways to fill a single gap. Here is how they compare at our two practices in the same building.
| 3-unit bridge | Single implant and crown | Partial denture | |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 fee | $3,200 to $5,400 | $3,500 to $6,000 | From $399 (acrylic) or $990 (flexible) |
| Fixed or removable | Fixed | Fixed | Removable |
| Time to finish | 2 to 3 weeks | 3 to 6 months | 2 to 3 weeks |
| Neighbouring teeth | Cut down for crowns | Left alone | Left alone, clasps rest on them |
| Surgery | No | Yes | No |
| Typical lifespan | 10 to 15 years with good care | Often longer, if gums stay healthy | Several years, then reline or remake |
Partial dentures are made next door at Oak Park Denture Clinic, in Suite 2.
Our honest take
If the teeth next to the gap already have large fillings or crowns, a bridge often makes a lot of sense. You are restoring those teeth anyway, and the bridge does two jobs at once.
If those neighbouring teeth are healthy and untouched, we usually talk about an implant first. Grinding down two good teeth to replace one is a real trade-off, and once a tooth has been shaped for a crown, it needs a crown for life.
If cost is the deciding factor right now, a partial denture fills the gap for a fraction of the price and keeps your options open. Plenty of people wear one for a year or two and move to an implant later.
How a bridge is done
- Exam and X-rays. We check the anchor teeth, the gums and your bite.
- Preparation. Under local anaesthetic, we shape the two anchor teeth and take a scan or impression. You leave with a temporary bridge the same day.
- Fit. About two weeks later we try the final bridge, check the bite and cement it.
Most people say the preparation visit feels like having two fillings done.
Looking after a bridge
Ordinary floss cannot get under the false tooth. You need a floss threader, super floss or a water flosser to clean underneath it every day. Plaque that sits under a bridge is the main reason anchor teeth decay and bridges fail early.
Keep up your regular check-ups so we can catch any problem at the edges of the crowns while it is still small.
Health funds and DVA
Bridges fall under major dental on most extras policies. The rebate depends on your fund and level of cover, and many funds apply a 12-month waiting period for major dental, so check yours before booking. We claim through HICAPS at reception.
DVA Gold Card holders are covered for clinically necessary bridges within their DVA limit. We help arrange the prior approval DVA requires. More detail is on our DVA dental page.
