Frequently Asked Questions

What is deep periodontal cleaning (root planing)?
Root planing and deep scaling involve cleaning below the gumline to remove bacterial plaque, calculus (tartar), and toxins from root surfaces to allow gum tissue to heal and reattach.
Is deep periodontal cleaning painful?
We use local anesthesia during root planing so you feel no discomfort. Gums may feel slightly tender for 24-48 hours post-procedure as inflammation subsides.
How many appointments are needed for periodontal treatment?
Comprehensive periodontal debridement is typically completed in 2 to 4 visits, treating one or two quadrants of the mouth per appointment for maximum patient comfort.
Can advanced periodontitis be cured completely?
Periodontitis cannot be 'cured' because lost bone does not spontaneously regenerate, but it can be permanently arrested and stabilized with ongoing 3-monthly maintenance.
What is a periodontal pocket depth measurement?
A periodontal probe measures the space between your tooth and gum line. Normal healthy pockets are 1-3mm; pockets 4mm or deeper indicate active gum disease.
Will gum disease cause my teeth to fall out if untreated?
Yes. Untreated periodontitis destroys the jawbone surrounding tooth roots, causing teeth to loosen, shift, and ultimately require extraction.
Are periodontal treatments covered by DVA or private health funds?
Yes! DVA Gold Card holders receive fully funded periodontal care. Private health insurance covers deep scaling under periodontal codes (222-250).
What antimicrobial rinses are recommended for gum disease?
We often prescribe chlorhexidine 0.2% mouthwash for short-term use post-cleaning to suppress periodontal pathogens while tissues heal.
Why do my gums bleed when flossing?
Bleeding gums are a primary warning sign of active bacterial inflammation (gingivitis or periodontitis). Daily flossing reduces plaque and stops bleeding within 7-10 days.
Can electronic toothbrushes help control gum disease?
Yes. Oscillating-rotating electric toothbrushes remove significantly more plaque along the gumline than manual toothbrushing, reducing pocket depths faster.
