Frequently Asked Questions

How long do full dentures last?
With proper care, full dentures typically last 5-7 years before needing replacement. However, your gums and jawbone naturally change shape over time, so you will need relines every 2-3 years to maintain a good fit. Some patients get 10+ years from their dentures with regular relines.
Will I be able to eat normally with full dentures?
Yes, but there is an adjustment period. For the first 2-4 weeks, stick to soft foods while you learn to chew with your dentures. Most patients regain 70-80% of their natural chewing ability. You will be able to eat most foods, though very hard or sticky foods may always be challenging. Lower dentures are typically harder to adapt to than upper dentures.
How much do full dentures cost in Oak Park?
A single full denture (upper or lower) costs $1,500-$2,000. Both upper and lower together cost $2,500-$3,000. If you are eligible for the Victorian Denture Scheme, your dentures are fully covered and you pay nothing. We also offer payment plans to make dentures affordable.
Will my dentures look natural?
Yes. We carefully select tooth shade, shape, and size to match your natural appearance. We consider your age, facial features, and preferences. Modern denture teeth look very realistic. Most people will not notice you are wearing dentures unless you tell them.
How long does it take to get full dentures?
The process takes 2-3 weeks from start to finish, with 4-5 appointments. Because we have an on-site laboratory, we can complete your dentures faster than clinics that send work away. Some clinics take 4-6 weeks or longer.
Will my dentures slip or fall out?
A well-fitted upper denture should stay in place with suction. Lower dentures are more challenging because there is less surface area for suction. Some patients use a small amount of denture adhesive for extra security, especially with lower dentures. Proper fit is key, which is why we include free adjustments in the first 6 months.
Do I need to take my dentures out at night?
Yes, we recommend removing your dentures at night. This gives your gums a chance to rest and recover. It also allows you to clean your dentures thoroughly. Sleeping with dentures can increase risk of gum irritation and infections.
Can I get dentures if I have some teeth remaining?
If you have some teeth left, you may need extractions before getting full dentures. We can coordinate this with a dentist. Alternatively, consider immediate dentures which are placed the same day as extractions, so you never go without teeth. Or if you want to keep some teeth, partial dentures may be a better option.
Are full dentures covered by the Victorian Denture Scheme?
Yes, if you are eligible for VDS (hold a Pensioner Concession Card or Health Care Card and meet income requirements), your full dentures are fully covered. You pay nothing. We handle all the paperwork. Call us to check your eligibility.
What is the difference between full dentures and implant-retained dentures?
Traditional full dentures rest on your gums and rely on suction. Implant-retained dentures snap onto dental implants surgically placed in your jaw. Implant dentures are much more stable and never slip, but cost significantly more ($8,000-$15,000 vs $1,500-$3,000). We can discuss both options.
