Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be without teeth during healing?
No! Immediate dentures are placed the same day as extraction, so you never go without teeth. This is the main advantage of immediate dentures over conventional dentures, which require a 6-8 week healing period before placement.
How do immediate dentures differ from regular dentures?
Immediate dentures are made before your teeth are extracted and placed the same day. Regular dentures are made after extractions and require a 6-8 week healing period. Immediate dentures allow you to maintain your appearance and function immediately, but require more adjustments as your gums heal and shrink.
Will immediate dentures fit properly?
Immediate dentures fit reasonably well at placement, but your gums will shrink significantly as they heal over 3-6 months. This means immediate dentures become loose and require frequent adjustments and relines. Once healing is complete, many patients choose to have a new permanent denture made for optimal fit.
How long do I need to wear immediate dentures?
You wear immediate dentures during the healing period, typically 3-6 months. After healing is complete, we assess the fit. Some patients continue wearing their immediate dentures with a reline. Others prefer a new permanent denture for better fit and appearance.
Can I eat with immediate dentures?
Yes, but start with very soft foods for the first week while your extraction sites heal. Gradually progress to firmer foods as healing allows. Immediate dentures will not fit as well as permanent dentures, so chewing may be more challenging initially. Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods during the healing period.
How much do immediate dentures cost in Oak Park?
Immediate dentures including extractions cost $2,000-$4,000 depending on complexity. If you are eligible for the Victorian Denture Scheme, your immediate dentures are fully covered and you pay nothing. We also offer payment plans.
Are immediate dentures covered by VDS?
Yes, if you are eligible for the Victorian Denture Scheme, your immediate dentures are fully covered including extractions. You pay nothing. We handle all the paperwork. Call us to check your eligibility.
Will I need a new denture after healing?
Not always. After 3-6 months of healing, we assess your immediate dentures. If they still fit reasonably well with a reline, you can continue wearing them. However, many patients prefer a new permanent denture for optimal fit, comfort, and appearance. We discuss your options at that time.
How many adjustments will I need?
Most patients need 4-6 adjustment visits during the first 3-6 months as their gums heal and shrink. We include these adjustments in the initial cost. Adjustments are quick and ensure your dentures remain comfortable as your mouth changes.
Can I sleep with immediate dentures?
For the first few nights after extraction, we may recommend sleeping with your immediate dentures to control swelling and protect extraction sites. After that, remove them at night to give your gums a rest, just like regular dentures.
