Frequently Asked Questions

What type of partial denture is best for me?
It depends on your situation. Chrome cobalt partials are most durable and comfortable for long-term wear, making them the best value despite higher upfront cost. Acrylic partials are more affordable and good for temporary use or if you may lose more teeth soon. Flexible partials like Valplast are ideal if you want no metal clasps for better appearance, or if you have metal allergies. We help you choose based on your needs and budget.
How much do partial dentures cost in Oak Park?
Acrylic partials cost $800-$1,200. Chrome cobalt partials cost $1,500-$2,000. Flexible partials cost $1,200-$1,800. The exact price depends on how many teeth you are replacing and the complexity. If you are eligible for VDS, your partial denture is fully covered and you pay nothing.
Will my partial denture look natural?
Yes. We match the teeth to your remaining natural teeth in shade, shape, and size. Chrome partials have small metal clasps that may be visible when you smile, depending on where they are positioned. Flexible partials like Valplast have no metal clasps and are virtually invisible. Acrylic partials have metal or acrylic clasps.
How long do partial dentures last?
Chrome cobalt partials typically last 10-15 years with proper care. Acrylic partials last 3-5 years. Flexible partials last 5-7 years. All types may need relines every few years as your gums change shape. Regular checkups help us monitor their condition.
Can I eat normally with a partial denture?
Yes, partial dentures restore good chewing function. There is an adjustment period of 1-2 weeks. Start with soft foods and gradually progress to harder foods. Chrome partials provide the best chewing function because they are rigid and well-supported. Flexible partials are comfortable but may flex slightly when chewing hard foods.
Will a partial denture damage my remaining teeth?
No, if properly designed and fitted. The clasps should grip your teeth firmly but not too tightly. We design the partial to distribute chewing forces evenly. Regular checkups ensure the partial is not causing any problems. Poor-fitting partials can damage teeth, which is why proper fit is critical.
Do I need to take my partial denture out at night?
We recommend removing your partial denture at night to give your gums and remaining teeth a rest. This also allows you to clean it thoroughly. Some patients prefer to sleep with their partial in, which is usually fine if it fits well and you clean it daily.
Can I add more teeth to my partial denture later if I lose more teeth?
Yes, in most cases we can add teeth to an existing partial denture. This is much cheaper than making a new partial. However, if you lose many teeth or the partial is old, a new partial may be a better option. We assess each situation individually.
What is the difference between chrome and acrylic partial dentures?
Chrome (metal) partials have a thin, strong metal framework that is more comfortable and durable. They last longer and feel less bulky in your mouth. Acrylic partials are made entirely of plastic, are thicker and less durable, but cost less. Chrome is the better long-term investment for most patients.
Are partial dentures covered by the Victorian Denture Scheme?
Yes, if you are eligible for VDS, your partial denture is fully covered regardless of which type you choose (acrylic, chrome, or flexible). You pay nothing. We handle all the paperwork. Call us to check your eligibility.
