Implant-Retained Dentures

The most secure denture solution available. Implant-retained dentures snap onto dental implants surgically placed in your jawbone. No slipping, no adhesives, no embarrassment. Restore 90% of your natural chewing function. Implant dentures are the gold standard for patients who want maximum stability and confidence. While traditional dentures rest on your gums and can slip, implant dentures are anchored to titanium posts in your jaw and never move. Eat, speak, and smile with complete confidence.

Our Process

1

Consultation & Planning

We examine your mouth and take a CT scan to assess your jawbone. We determine how many implants you need (typically 2-4 for lower, 4-6 for upper). We explain the process, timeline, and costs. We coordinate with an implant specialist for the surgery.

2

Implant Placement Surgery

An oral surgeon places the dental implants into your jawbone. This is done under local anesthetic or sedation. You may have a temporary denture to wear during healing. The surgery is coordinated through our referral network.

2-3 hours
3

Healing Period (Osseointegration)

The implants fuse with your jawbone over 3-6 months. This process, called osseointegration, creates a strong foundation for your denture. You wear a temporary denture during this time.

3-6 months
4

Abutment Placement

Once implants are healed, the surgeon attaches abutments (connectors) to the implants. These abutments will hold your denture in place. This is a minor procedure.

5

Denture Fabrication

We create your custom implant-retained denture with special attachments that snap onto the abutments. We take precise impressions and ensure perfect fit.

Your completed denture is attached to the implants. We teach you how to snap it on and off for cleaning. We make final adjustments for perfect comfort and function.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many implants do I need for implant-retained dentures?
Lower dentures typically need 2-4 implants. Upper dentures typically need 4-6 implants. The upper jaw requires more implants because the bone is less dense. We assess your specific situation with a CT scan and recommend the optimal number for your case.
What is the difference between implant-retained and implant-supported dentures?
Implant-retained dentures (also called overdentures) snap onto implants but still rest partly on your gums. They are removable for cleaning. Implant-supported dentures (also called fixed dentures or All-on-4) are screwed onto implants and are not removable except by a dentist. Implant-retained dentures are more affordable and easier to clean.
How much do implant-retained dentures cost in Oak Park?
The denture itself costs $8,000-$15,000. Implant surgery is additional, typically $2,000-$4,000 per implant. For a lower denture with 2 implants, total cost is around $12,000-$23,000. For an upper denture with 4 implants, total cost is around $16,000-$31,000. We offer payment plans to make this investment affordable.
Are implant dentures better than regular dentures?
Implant dentures are significantly more stable and functional than traditional dentures. They never slip, require no adhesives, and restore 90% of natural chewing function (vs 25-50% for traditional dentures). However, they cost 5-10 times more and require surgery. For patients who can afford them, implant dentures provide superior quality of life.
Does the surgery hurt?
Implant surgery is done under local anesthetic or sedation, so you feel no pain during the procedure. After surgery, you may have some swelling and discomfort for 3-7 days, managed with pain medication. Most patients say the surgery is easier than they expected and the results are worth any temporary discomfort.
How long do implant-retained dentures last?
The dental implants can last 20-30 years or even a lifetime with proper care. The denture itself typically lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement. The attachments may need replacement every 5-10 years. Overall, implant dentures are a long-term investment.
Can I eat anything with implant dentures?
Yes! Implant dentures restore about 90% of your natural chewing function. You can eat steak, apples, corn on the cob, and other foods that are difficult with traditional dentures. There are very few food restrictions.
Do I take implant dentures out at night?
Yes, we recommend removing your implant dentures at night for cleaning and to give your gums a rest. They snap on and off easily. Some patients prefer to sleep with them in, which is usually fine if you clean them thoroughly.
Am I too old for dental implants?
Age is not a barrier to dental implants. We have successfully placed implant dentures for patients in their 70s, 80s, and even 90s. What matters is your general health and jawbone quality, which we assess during consultation.
What if I do not have enough jawbone for implants?
If your jawbone has deteriorated significantly, you may need bone grafting before implant placement. This adds time and cost to the process. Alternatively, mini implants or zygomatic implants may be options. We assess your bone quality with a CT scan and discuss all options.
Are implant dentures covered by the Victorian Denture Scheme?
No, VDS only covers traditional dentures, not implant dentures. However, some private health funds provide partial rebates for implants and dentures. We can provide quotes for your health fund.
How do I clean implant-retained dentures?
Remove your denture daily and clean it with a soft brush and denture cleaner, just like traditional dentures. Also brush the implant abutments in your mouth with a soft toothbrush. Regular dental checkups ensure the implants and denture remain healthy.
What types of attachments are available?
The most common attachment types are ball attachments, bar attachments, and locator attachments. Locator attachments are the most popular because they are low-profile, durable, and easy to use. We recommend the best attachment type for your situation.
Can I convert my existing denture to an implant denture?
Sometimes yes, if your existing denture is in good condition. We can modify it to attach to implants. However, in many cases a new denture is recommended for optimal fit and function with the implants.
What is the success rate of dental implants?
Dental implants have a 95-98% success rate when placed by an experienced surgeon and properly maintained. Factors that affect success include smoking, diabetes, and oral hygiene. We assess your risk factors during consultation.
Do you place the implants or refer out?
We coordinate with experienced oral surgeons and implant specialists for the surgical placement. We handle all the denture work in our on-site laboratory. This team approach ensures you get the best surgical and prosthetic outcomes.
Can I get implant dentures if I have diabetes?
Yes, but diabetes must be well-controlled. Uncontrolled diabetes increases the risk of implant failure and infection. We work with your doctor to ensure your diabetes is managed before proceeding with implants.
What is All-on-4?
All-on-4 is a specific technique where a full arch of fixed teeth is supported by just 4 implants. It is a type of implant-supported denture (not removable). All-on-4 costs more than implant-retained dentures ($25,000-$50,000 per arch) but provides a fixed solution. We can discuss if All-on-4 is right for you.
How soon after tooth extraction can I get implants?
Implants can sometimes be placed immediately after extraction (immediate implants). More commonly, we wait 3-6 months after extraction for the bone to heal before placing implants. The timing depends on your specific situation.
Will my implant dentures look natural?
Yes! We create your implant denture with the same attention to aesthetics as any denture. We match tooth shade, shape, and size to your preferences. Because implant dentures are more stable, they can be made with less bulky material, resulting in a more natural appearance.
